Shangqiu's industries have developed at an extremely fast pace. Its foundation is based on the coal, aluminum, refrigeration, textile, brewery, food-processing, medicine, building materials, and machinery manufacturing industries. A number of nationally and internationally famous enterprises, such as Yongmei, Shenhuo, Shangdian Aluminum, Fuyuan, Zhenhua Glass, Henan Hengxing Paper and Shangqiu Yulong Chemical Co., are based here. These enterprises, and others, have served as the backbone of Shangqiu's economy. There are over 37 enterprises with sales exceeding RMB 100 million and 4 exceeding RMB 1 billion. The sales of Yongmei Group and Shenhuo Group broke through RMB 11 billion and RMB 5 billion respectively in 2005.
Shangqiu has a number of brands competitive in the market. The trademarks of nine enterprises' have been honored with the title of Henan Province's Famous Trademarks; five enterprises have been honored with the title of Famous Brand Product of Henan Province; the leading products of twelve enterprises are Henan Checking-free Products or Henan High Quality Products. Yongcheng city has been named “China's Flour City”, while Yucheng County has been named “China's Steel Tape City”. A large number of products by famous brands of Shangqiu enjoy a good reputation in domestic and overseas markets, such as high-quality coal, aluminum ingots, plate glass, beer, liquor, leather products and refrigeration equipment, to name a few.
Shangqiu's agricultural sector is also rapidly improving, Aiming to increase farmers' incomes, speed up agricultural development and improve the living environment in rural areas, the city's Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government is putting emphasis on agricultural work, promoting the industrialization and modernization of agriculture, strengthening the leading enterprises, stressing on intensive processing of agricultural products, extending the industrial chain, and promoting value-added processing of agricultural products. It has formed four dominant industries, namely, grain and cooking oil, cotton, wood, and livestock processing. The processing of agricultural products and its distribution system is shaping up. There are three key state-level agriculture industrialization enterprises and ten province-level ones. There are over 150 production bases involved in the processing of over 500 agricultural products with more than 500,000 peasant families engaged in large-scale production.
Shangqiu has achieved great success in the field of science and technology, and its educational system has greatly advanced. Schools of all levels are in good condition and in a constant state of improvement. The whole city has over 4200 schools, among which over 30 are colleges and technical schools. Shangqiu is also very active in the fields of culture and art, and holds a variety of colorful cultural activities for the public. Basic health care facilities are available to to all urban and rural areas with a number of advanced facilities in the main city and other strategic locations.
To strengthen urban construction and upgrade the city, Shangqiu has invested billions of RMB into more than 180 main streets and has significantly improved its infrastructure. Projects involving beautification of the city, improved distribution of water, electricity, heating and gas, and anti-pollution measures have been undertaken, leading to a marked improvement in the city's functioning and environment. After receiving a number of accolades in recognition of the results of its efforts, the city of Shangqiu now aims to significantly improve the hygiene of the city and its image.
As a result of the all-round development, the GDP of Shangqiu City reached RMB 64.65 billion in the year 2006, an increase of 13.1% over the previous year. Imports and exports amounted to approximately US$107.04 million of which US$96.48 million accounts for exports. This represents a growth of 104% compared to the same period in the previous year and, is the fastest in the Henan Province.
